A palmtree screensaver

It’s amazing how remote work has been settling after the pandemic. It seems to me like each sector, industry and role are adapting differently to it. Some went hybrid, some still look for your presence, some don’t even care where you are at. But the real question here is why should you care about remote?

People typically praise remote work as something that has helped them wake up to amazing views, save time in their commute, live in paradise like spots, or travel all around the world with their laptop.

While those are certainly enjoyable, I can’t help but feel loneliness when I see posts like this one around social media.

Remote for me means family. It means me and my wife get both to pursue our careers, get to spend time with our kid, and get to have our parents close to each of us, and their grandson.

It means my meals are with my wife, whatever sits behind my laptop. It means at night I’ll sing with my baby. It means I’ll dine with my friends on Friday, and visit my parents the day after. Who would even care about the landscape or the weather without that?

Every time I see a palm tree behind a laptop, praising remote work, I feel a strong sense of pity – wondering what are so many remote folks doing wondering about the whole world alone –. There’s no place like home, family and friends. In rainy cities, and hot arid places, landscape just doesn’t cut the chase when it comes to happiness.
